Window Energy Replacement Tips:
Carbon Footprint /Energy Bill  Reductions

Window/Energy facts:

Windows can be one of your home's most attractive features.

Windows provide views, daylighting, ventilation, and solar heating in the winter. Unfortunately, they can also account for 10% to 25% of your cooling/heating bill. During the summer, your air conditioner must work much harder to cool hot air radiating from sunny 100+ degree single pane windows.

If your home has older single-pane windows, as most U.S. homes do, consider replacing them with new double-pane windows with high-performance glass (e.g., low-e, gas filled and or with spectrally selective glazings).

In warmer climates, select windows with Low-E triple soft coated glazing with 3/4, 7/8 or 1" high performance spacers to reduce heat gain or with "spectrally selective" coatings.

In colder climates, select windows with 2 or up to 3 panes that are Krypton gas filled with low emissivity (low-e)  and spectrally selective coatings on the glass to reduce heat loss. Argon gas is usually the default window gas fill and krypton being a higher priced option.

If you are building a new home, you can offset some of the cost of installing more efficient windows because they allow you to buy smaller, less expensive heating and cooling equipment thus reducing your residential carbon footprint and power bills.

Installing ENERGY STAR .30 or lower compliant windows and using blinds or curtains and shade will give your air conditioner and energy bill a break.

The Current Administration is offering up to $1500.00 in federal Energy tax refund credits in 2009 and could extend into 2010.

Several municipal area utilities are considering offering low interest loans to install compliant energy star windows in existng homes in central Texas as well as air conditioning upgrade rebate assistance now .

Rebates and Tax Credits for Windows, Doors, and Skylights

Local Rebates

Many local utilities are beginning to provide financial incentives for purchasing ENERGY STAR qualified windows, doors, and skylights. To find out if rebates or other incentives are available in your area, visit the ENERGY STAR Rebate Finder.

Overview of Federal Energy Efficiency Tax Incentives passed as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Tax Act of 2009
*Updated matrix of energy efficiency incentives

Federal Tax Credits

On February 17, President Obama signed into law the American Recovery and Reinvestment Tax Act of 2009. This bill extends and modifies the tax credits for windows, doors, and skylights established in the Energy Policy Act of 2005. The following guidance is not intended as legal advice, and you should consult a tax professional with specific questions.

Qualifying products purchased between January 1, 2009 and December 31, 2010 are eligible for a tax credit equal to 30 percent of the product cost. Installation is not included; be sure to obtain an itemized invoice from your retailer or installer. The maximum amount of homeowner credit for all improvements combined (including roofing, insulation, HVAC, and water heaters) is $1,500 during 2009 and 2010.

Products Purchased before June 1, 2009

Criteria: Windows, doors, and skylights purchased before June 1, 2009 must meet or exceed the prescriptive criteria established by the 2001 Supplement of the 2000 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) or the 2004 Supplement of the 2003 IECC for the climate zone in which the product is installed.

Documentation: For windows and skylights, homeowners may use either ENERGY STAR labels or manufacturer certification statements to document eligibility for the tax credit. Doors are required to have a manufacturer certification statement.

Products Purchased on or after June 1, 2009

Criteria: Windows, doors, and skylights purchased on or after June 1, 2009 must have U-factor and Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) ratings of 0.30 or less. These ratings must be certified by the National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC). Look for the NFRC label. NFRC is the only federally recognized organization for determining the energy performance of windows, doors and skylights. Please see the NFRC website Exit ENERGY STAR for information concerning product performance.

Documentation: Homeowners must obtain a manufacturer certification statement to document window, door, or skylight eligibility for the tax credit. If the retailer or installer cannot provide this document, it may be available on the manufacturer's Web site
But infiltration - unplanned air leakage through an old window's joints, cracks, frames and sashes - can account for as much as 15 percent of a home's heating and cooling losses. It can make a home much less comfortable and increase energy costs causing extended operational cycles.

Warm-Climate Window Tips

  • Install white window shades, drapes, or blinds to reflect heat away from the house.

  • Close curtains on south- and west-facing windows during the day.

  • Install awnings on south- and west-facing windows.

  • Apply sun-control or other reflective films on south-facing windows to reduce solar gain.

Long-Term Savings Tip

  • Installing, high-performance windows will improve your home's energy performance. While it may take many years for new windows to pay off in energy savings, the benefits of added comfort and improved aesthetics and functionality may make the investment worth it to you. Many window technologies are available that are worth considering.

Efficient windows may have two or more panes of glass, warm-edge spacers between the window panes, improved framing materials, foam filled frames, and triple low-e coatings(s), which are microscopically thin coatings that help keep heat inside during the winter and outside during the summer.

Shopping Tips for Windows

  • Look for the ENERGY STAR label.

  • Check with local utilities to see what rebates or other financial incentives are available for window replacement.

  • High-performance windows have at least two panes of glass and a triple low-e (low emissivity) coating and a Argon or Krypton gas fill and 3/4" ,7/8" or 1" superspacers.

  • Remember, the lower the U-factor, the better the insulation. In colder climates, focus on finding a low U-factor .30 or lower.

  • Low solar heat gain coefficients (SHGCs) reduce heat gain. In warm climates, look for a low SHGC.

  • In temperate climates with both heating and cooling seasons, select windows with both low U-factors and low SHGCs to maximize energy savings.

  • Look for whole-unit U-factors and SHGCs, rather than center-of-glass, or COG, U-factors and SHGCs. Whole-unit numbers more accurately reflect the energy performance of the entire product.

  • Have your windows installed by trained professionals. Be sure they're installed according to manufacturer's instructions; otherwise, your warranty may be void.

Energy Performance Ratings for Windows, Doors, and Skylights

You can use the energy performance ratings of windows, doors, and skylights to tell you their potential for gaining and losing heat, as well as transmitting sunlight into your home.

    Heat Gain and Loss

Windows, doors, skylights can gain and lose heat in the following ways:

    • Direct conduction through the glass or glazing, frame, and/or door
    • The radiation of heat into a house (typically from the sun) and out of a house from room-temperature objects, such as people, furniture, and interior walls
    • Air leakage through and around them.

These properties can be measured and rated according to the following energy performance characteristics:

    • U-factor

The rate at which a window, door, or skylight conducts non-solar heat flow. It's usually expressed in units of Btu/hr-ft2-ºF. For windows, skylights, and glass doors, a U-factor may refer to just the glass or glazing alone. But National Fenestration Rating Council U-factor ratings represent the entire window performance, including frame and spacer material. The lower the U-factor, the more energy-efficient the window, door, or skylight.

    • Solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC)

A fraction of solar radiation admitted through a window, door, or skylight—either transmitted directly and/or absorbed, and subsequently released as heat inside a home. The lower the SHGC, the less solar heat it transmits and the greater its shading ability. A product with a high SHGC rating is more effective at collecting solar heat gain during the winter. A product with a low SHGC rating is more effective at reducing cooling loads during the summer by blocking heat gained from the sun. Therefore, what SHGC you need for a window, door, or skylight should be determined by such factors as your climate, orientation, and external shading. For more information about SHGC and windows, see passive solar window design.

    • Air leakage

The rate of air infiltration around a window, door, or skylight in the presence of a specific pressure difference across it. It's expressed in units of cubic feet per minute per square foot of frame area (cfm/ft2). A product with a low air leakage rating is tighter than one with a high air leakage rating.

    Sunlight Transmittance

A window's, door's, or skylight's ability to transmit sunlight into a home can be measured and rated according to the following energy performance characteristics:

    • Visible transmittance (VT)

A fraction of the visible spectrum of sunlight (380 to 720 nanometers), weighted by the sensitivity of the human eye, that is transmitted through a window's, door's, or skylight's glazing. A product with a higher VT transmits more visible light. VT is expressed as a number between 0 and 1. The VT you need for a window, door, or skylight should be determined by your home's daylighting requirements and/or whether you need to reduce interior glare in a space.

    • Light-to-solar gain (LSG)

The ratio between the SHGC and VT. It provides a gauge of the relative efficiency of different glass or glazing types in transmitting daylight while blocking heat gains. The higher the number, the more light transmitted without adding excessive amounts of heat. This energy performance rating isn't always provided.

Energy Performance Testing, Certification and Labeling

The National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) operates a voluntary program that tests, certifies, and labels windows, doors, and skylights based on their energy performance ratings. The NFRC label provides a reliable way to determine a window's energy properties and to compare products.

The NFRC label can be found on all ENERGY STAR® qualified window, door, and skylight products, but ENERGY STAR bases its qualification only on U-factor and SHGC ratings.

Hydrogen Fuel Cell Database

Fuel Cell Overview

A Honda Hydrogen Generator  Fuel Cell Savings/Consumption Video for "Carbon Footprint" Energy Bill Reductions thru home fuel cell generation.

Hydrogen Fuel Cell Technology

    Types of Hydrogen Generators

  1.      Hydrogen generators may either be generators that are powered by hydrogen or natural gas extraction units that make hydrogen. A generator that is powered by hydrogen will use the gas or a hydrogen fuel cell to generate electricity for use by the generator. A generator that produces hydrogen will do so through either by using electrolysis processing or water, or the extraction and reformation of pure hydrogen from a hydrogen rich chemical such as sodium borohydride, ammonia, methanol or gasoline. The water electrolysis method produces little waste to be disposed o,f while the extraction and reformation process creates numerous byproducts that must be disposed of or recycled through some other process.

    How it Works

  2. Whether the hydrogen generator is using water or extracting and reforming hydrogen from other chemicals, the basic principal of the generator remains the same. The source liquid or chemical is placed in a container with two metal plates. The plates are then "charged" (either through the introduction of electricity or through a chemical reaction) causing the elements of the source to separate into H2 and a byproduct that is not used by the generator. The H2 is then removed from the container.

    Current Applications

  3. Many hydrogen generators that use water electrolysis technology are sold to the public as part of fuel efficiency systems to be installed in private vehicles. An ultra-high purity hydrogen generator that works on the water electrolysis system is used in medical and research fields to produce high purity hydrogen for gas chromatography and other uses. Extraction and reformation generators tend to be used in fueling stations for hydrogen cars (they extract the hydrogen from natural gas stored at the stations) and in hydrogen fuel cells that are installed in hybrid vehicles that combine the cell with a conventional combustion engine.

    Potential Applications

  4. Many countries are aggressively pursuing the development of hydrogen generator technology as they recognize that hydrogen generators could radically reduce the amount of toxic emissions released into the atmosphere if systems were placed in all vehicles, whether as hydrogen fuel cells in a hybrid car or as additional supports to fuel efficiency in a standard car, and hydrogen generators were added to their country's power grids. The use of hydrogen generators in vehicles could drastically reduce dependence on fossil fuels. That a hydrogen generator can be easily built out of everyday items and produce enough electricity and H2 gas to power houses, vehicles and other applications could change the nature of the global economy by making electricity and power affordable and available to everyone, on or off established power grids. Both the Energy Information Administration of the U.S. Government and the National Research Council of Canada maintain websites to promote and document their efforts into seeing their technology brought into its full use within the next 20 years. Both countries support research to release the potential ability of a hydrogen generator to "recycle" chemicals and use plain water as a source for energy and make it a source for endless, renewable electricity.

All-The-Time Power

Plug Power offers two GenSys fuel cell
systems that provide continuous power in
distinct applications.

Grid-Connected,
Combined Heat and Power

The high-temperature GenSys fuel cell system operates parallel to the grid as a replacement for traditional furnaces and boilers in residential and light commercial applications. The combined heat and power (CHP) system runs on natural gas at a temperature between 160° C and 180° C, making it compatible with existing home heating systems – working seamlessly with radiant, forced air or baseboard hot water.

The high-quality heat generated by the system can meet the full heating needs of a home while supplementing the electrical load. The high-temperature GenSys is expected to deliver a 20% to 40% reduction in home energy costs and 15% to 25% reduction in home CO2 emissions compared with incumbent technology.

Fuel cell systems offer the potential for clean, reliable energy generation. These systems can be deployed to operate in parallel with the grid, as independent energy sources or to complement solar and wind generating systems. With a higher efficiency than conventional power generation, little or no pollution and greater flexibility in installation and operation, they offer commercially viable alternatives to existing power sources.

Hydrogen/Natural gas  is the primary fuel source for fuel cells. The process of fuel reforming allows for the extraction of hydrogen from many widely available fuels such as natural gas and propane or any other hydrogen-containing fuel.

From Cell to Stack
To produce a usable amount of electricity, multiple fuel cells, each producing up to about one volt, are combined into a fuel cell stack. The stack is designed to produce the desired electrical current and voltage for a specific application. The direct current electricity produced can be varied over a wide range by altering the area and number of cells in the stack.

From Stack to System
Producing electrical power for a working application requires more than just the fuel cell stack. A fuel cell system may include fuel processing, thermal management, power conditioning, electric grid connection and energy storage modules. The power conditioning system provides regulated DC or AC power appropriate for the application. The successful integration of an entire fuel cell system is critical to achieve optimal performance.

Soon a new appliance every home will have to reduce energy /fossil fuel dependence.

Tax Credits

Federal Tax Credit

The Investment Tax Credit (ITC) for fuel cell technology provides business property owners with a credit of 30% of the cost  of the fuel cell units or up to $3,000 per kW, whichever is lower. The credit expires on December 31, 2016.

The ITC entitles the taxpayer to subtract the amount of the credit (dollar-for-dollar) from total federal tax liability. A tax credit is different from a tax deduction – which subtracts money from gross income before tax liability is calculated.

Allowance of credit is permissible against the Alternative Minimum Tax. This allows persons subject to AMT to take the credit against that portion of their tax liability.

Pricing is coming down every day and new 2009  stimulus investments are enabling competitive pricing options and home natural gas powered hydrogen fueling /generation stations are now appearing from various vendors and the technology is evolving quickly,Honda Motor Company {ClarityFCX} and Hyundai will have a fuel cell vehicle in full production in 2010.

Following are two examples of how theFuel Cell  ITC could work:

1. Assume a price of $100,000 for 10 5kW fuel cell power units.

  • 30% of total system price ($100,000) = $30,000
    or
  • 50kW x $3,000 = $150,000

Incentive = $30,000

2. Assume a price of $600,000 for 10 5kW fuel cell power units

  • 30% of total system price ($600,000) = $180,000
    or
  • 50kW x $3,000 = $150,000

Incentive = $150,000

How do you install the solar shingles?

Roof Shingles roof shingles, and photovoltaic shingles

An owner's installation manual is included with the purchase of all solar roofing products.  In general, a roofing contractor will begin by following conventional roofing installation procedures, until the solar shingle installation. Using a template provided by Manufacturer, the roofer will then mark and drill holes for the solar shingle wiring to be pulled through the roof. After the solar shingles are installed to match the course of the conventional shingles, an electrical system installer will wire the solar shingles together in the space below the roof, and then wire the array of shingles to the combiner box.  The electrical contractor will take the wires from the combiner box and run them down to the power conditioning equipment (charge controller, meters, system disconnect switches, fuses, inverter, and batteries).

    Wind Generators

Small wind systems are used for individual homes and businesses that are off-grid and grid-tie. A small off-grid wind system consists of a wind turbine, which generates electrical power, a battery bank that stores the power, and a Xantrex inverter. In many locations hybrid systems that include solar panels and a generator are used to ensure a “round-the-clock” electricity supply.

A grid-tie wind system may be as simple as a wind turbine and a Xantrex grid-tie inverter. Depending on the amount of power being used by the household, electricity is either fed to or accepted from the utility.

The wind turbine is placed on a tower at a height of up to 100 feet where the rotor blades are exposed to faster and less turbulent wind. This enables the turbine to produce the maximum amount of power. Usually, two or three blades are mounted on a shaft connected to the turbine to form a rotor.

Wind blowing over the blades causes them to lift and rotate. This rotation is used to spin a shaft inside a generator that converts the motion into electricity for use in the house or business.

Wind is a completely renewable fuel source and produces no health risks and no air pollution. For information on complete wind systems follow this link to Wind Generators

From this point of view, the idea of using such parking spaces for solar trees appears quite illogical. However, at the front corners, where most cars are rounded, there is enough space to install them. With an average power of 400 Wp, the individual units are admittedly not particularly powerful, but there are many free corners, which add up to a lot of electricity. UPS systems by IQUPS
